Emily Holtzman is an artist, designer, and researcher from upstate New York (not the city). She currently resides in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 2018, she received a BFA in Textiles from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). During her time at RISD she found true love in industrial knitting and jacquard weaving. Cross registering at Brown University’s Biomedical Engineering Department taught her the value of working on inter-disciplinary teams. After graduating, she stuck around Providence to develop a 3D woven shoe with the Virtual Textile Research Group, leading to two SIGGRAPH publications (here and here), and a patent. Starting in 2019, Emily began working in MIT Lincoln Laboratory’s Advanced Materials and Microsystems Group, home of the Defense Fabric Discovery Center. During her time here, one of Emily’s teams won the Best Invention of the Year “Stretchable Knitted Stem Cell Scaffolds” (2022) and an R&D 100 award “Tunable Knitted Stem Cell Scaffolds” (2024).
And no, she will not “weave? you a sweater” :) *
*Sweaters are knit not woven, but I am afraid the answer is still no…
